HDTV Labs Frequently Asked Questions

(FAQ's) Frequently Asked Questions

Q:     Why do I have low C/N on the output of the Satellite Selector if the input looks fine?

While the signal level and C/N may be perfect on the input, the signal level may be too strong for the Satellite Selector. Check the specifications for the proper input window (-20 to -75dBm typical). A good test would be to lower the signal into the Satellite Selector and see if C/N increases. Typical output of C/N is anywhere from 13 to 17 depending upon the satellite and transponder.

Q:     Why do I not get 119 satellite output from the Satellite Selector?

When we see this issue, it has almost always been due to the connectors being shorted. This shuts down some internal circuitry that ends up producing 101 output instead of 119. Check all your dish connectors for proper installation and retry. If the problem persists, contact the technical support team for possible replacement.

Q:     Can I try out devices and return them if they don't fit my needs?

Yes, this is the main reason behind our 30-Day Satisfaction Guarantee. Anyone can test out a device for 30 days and if it's not for you, the only charge is for shipping and handling. We are hoping that once you see and check out our devices, you will be happy with your purchase. If for any reason you are not satisfied, you may return it within 30 days from the time it was shipped for exchange, refund, or credit towards a future purchase (excluding shipping and handling charges). See our "Returns Policy" for more information.

Q:     Why should I buy HDTV Labs?

Our products have all been designed with the installation professional in mind. If you are seeking the cleanest signal possible, a reliable product, and resulting cost savings by preventing truck rolls, then HDTV Labs is for you.

All of our products use corrosion resistant connectors that prevent early connector failure. Durable housings and designs to dissipate heat extend product life. With the capability of detecting very weak input signals to a level of -75dbm, the HDTV Labs’ devices can be placed much further from the dish.

The bottom line is we have specifically designed each product with you the technician in mind. All products are high performance, easy to install, and built to last. We feel our technical support will match anyone in the industry.

Q:     Why do I get "Searching for Satellite" on HD stations?

Typically this is not an entire building issue but rather an individual one in the home. Several things to consider, but the first thing to check is that all your devices are minimum 2 GHz rated.  Even one defective barrel or one rated at 1 GHz can cause this problem.

Q:     What amplifiers should I use for long runs of up to 500 feet?

HDTV Labs has powerful 40dB amplifiers in both 1-Port and 4-Port configurations. 20dB fixed and adjustable gain amplifiers can also be grouped to provide proper signal strength for long cable runs. We are one of the only companies that can custom manufacture amplifiers for you that have gain slope networks to fit your particular needs. See our amplifier page for more information or call technical support to discuss.

Q:     My power transformer is ticking, why?

A short has been created or the transformer is defective. Check your connectors on the device.

Q:     I have installed the new multi-switch in my rack and I have no signal, why?

First check to see that you are using the power supply included with the unit. Next, if it’s an HD issue, be sure you are using B-Band converters if the model is NOT an HR23 or H23. HR23 and H23 units do not require B-Band converters.

Q:     How do I know if I should order an adjustable gain or fixed gain product from you?

This will be determined from your design. If amplification devices are close to each other, then you need to set up those amps using an adjustable gain device. If the units have greater distance, then you should use the fixed gain devices. Check the technical specifications for each of the amps you wish to use. If you have further questions, please contact our technical support team for assistance.

Q:     Can you help with system design for large buildings?

Certainly! Our team of RF engineers and technicians are happy to help you with your designs. We actually install in the field ourselves, so we are well aware of the challenges and issues that arise.

Q:     I have a 43-story building that no matter what I do, I can't get it working properly. What should I do?

After checking the system from the top down and exhausting all other options, our technical support staff may be able to provide you with on-site technical assistance. Call us for more information.

Q:     Which amplifiers are DISH Network and which are DIRECTV?

The majority of our products are designed to be operational in the 250 to 2150 MHz frequency range and can be used in both DISH Network and DIRECTV systems. Our Satellite Selectors are designed and labeled for one system or the other. Check the online product descriptions and technical specifications for more details.

Q:     I have a product that I suspect is defective, how do I get a new one?

Contact the HDTV Labs technical support team or fill out an RMA Request form online under Customer Service. If we can’t resolve your situation and also believe the unit may be defective, we will issue a RMA number for you to get a replacement unit. See our “Returns Policy” for terms and conditions.
